Light Gas Oil
Light gas oil is used as a backup source for heating places like your home and businesses. It is also used in agricultural and shipping industries. Many industrial plants and power plants use this as a backup fuel source in the case of emergency when they may lose access to other forms of fuel.
Light gas oil is a form of diesel fuel. It’s a mixture of heavy petroleum and distillated oil. This fuel’s main purpose is to fuel trucks, ships and some other vehicles such as cars and tractors or other farming equipment. Because it is more of a pollutant than natural gas, it’s only used as a backup method electricity. This fuel is also much more expensive.
The most common area of the United States to use light fuel oil is the Northeast. Many people use this type of fuel to power backup generators in their homes during extended power outages. Some people take generators that burn light gas oil to sporting events (tailgating) to power televisions and other electronics. Others use these generators for camping, particularly if they have a camper with no access to electrical hookups.
European countries typically restrict this type of fuel to cars, SUVs and other vehicles. Buses commonly use this fuel, as most are diesel or light gas oil powered.
This oil product is a more expensive option for everyday use (other than fueling vehicles and farm equipment). Many peaking power centers use light gas oil in the event their natural gas supply stops for any reason. Natural gas is just a better option because it is more abundant, cleaner and less expensive, but light gas oil does serve a good purpose as a backup.
One of the concerns surrounding light gas oil is the environmental impact of this fuel. If this fuel leaks into water sources it beads and separates, harms wildlife living in the natural water sources. It can also affect drinking water supplies drawn from these lakes and rivers.
Conservation of this fuel is an important consideration. Although there are research projects looking for ways to increase light gas oil efficiency and to find more sources of this fossil fuel, conservation must happen while this research happens.
