Horizontal Propane Tanks
Heating your home or RV and cooking are two of the most common uses for propane tanks. A horizontal propane tank is a self-contained gas source and is used for the most practical uses of heating and cooking. These horizontal propane tanks can be purchased at hardware stores, propane dealers, and some gas stations will carry them. They are usually pretty easy to use and do not require special tools for installation.
You must always remember that propane is a gas, it is flammable, and it is stored under pressure and is dangerous. American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) tanks are regulated horizontal propane tanks to make sure that they are used in a safe manner. They must be kept up to date or they will be illegal.
ASME horizontal propane tanks are normally permanently mounted to motor homes and are used with vapour withdrawal valves. They will have separate fill valves with yellow caps. They will also have OPD devices that are required on all RV cylinders to ensure that they are not filled beyond 80%. The ASME cylinder has a maximum fill gauge and if you are an RV owner, you should understand the purpose of this device. The following will help you to distinguish it from others:
* It is part of the service valve located on DOT cylinders
* It is used to determine the 80 percent fill level
* It is connected with an internal tube which is at the 80% level
* It should always be OPEN while being filled
* While being filled vapour will emit until it reaches the 80% level, at which point it will start emitting a white mist, which is the liquid propane, and at this point the cylinder is full.
* If filled beyond the full level you will need to bleed the excess off.
* It is very dangerous to overfill
* The sun will increase the pressure of the tank
* Should be free of rust or missing paint
LP tanks or cylinders should never be used for purposes other than which they were originally intended and caution should always be taken when using or refilling your propane tanks. Remember that propane is a liquid gas, it is a gas that is stored under pressure, it is a flammable gas, and can be very dangerous. There are rules and regulations that need to be followed when using a horizontal propane tank to prevent using it in an illegal way.
