Propane Tank Opd

A propane tank is a very useful device that can be used to heat water instantly, economically and efficiently. This, however, does not take away the fact that they can be very dangerous if not maintained properly. For one, they are highly inflammable and thus they can lead to lots of injuries and even loss of lives if a catastrophe occurs. A tank that is most safe and reliable is one that comes equipped with an OPD. An OPD is an Overfill Protection Device, and its primary function is to prevent propane gas from overflowing the cylinder. Thus a propane tank that is equipped with OPD very, very safe.

The Overfill Protection Device is primarily important because when a propane tank is being filled, it is usually filled only up to 80% of its capacity. But if these tanks are filled beyond this level, there is a great risk of the gas leaking, which causes a lot of danger, since a single spark can set off an explosion. These devices are basically triangular knob-like valves that have been manufactured after a lot of careful research. They come in many types, because the gas cylinders those are to be fitted to also come in many different types.

It is important to make sure that the right overfill protection device is fitted to the right type of cylinder, so that its function is utilized to its maximum extent. Propane tanks that have the overfill protection device are very easily recognizable, and this fact should be kept in mind while buying them. If you are looking at a propane tank without an overfill protection valve, you have all the right to demand for one. Another advantage of the overfill protection device is that it is extremely difficult to tamper with, and thus when a person buys a propane tank equipped with it, they can be sure that it is as safe as it claims to be.

Many people labor under the misapprehension that overfill protection devices are profitable for the gas companies. This is not so. Most of these devices are very harmful to the propane tanks, but are used anyway because they add so much safety to it. The overfill protection device is harmful to the propane tanks because as soon as the gas reaches its maximum capacity the valve simply closes, the backward thrust of which is extremely hard on the pump. Thus, an overfill protection device is mandatory for anyone who owns a propane tank.
